“Beet the Devil”

Back in 2005, while skimming through Baf’s Guide to the Interactive Fiction Archive, I spotted the title “Beet the Devil”.

When I backed up to investigate, I discovered that I’d misread the page. I’d seen two entries side by side, “Beat the Devil” and “The Beetmonger’s Journal”, and condensed them into one. There was no “Beet the Devil” game listed… but… what if?

In this game, you play as a parish gardener whose dog has just given birth to puppies. When demons steal his dog, the gardener sets out to rescue her, armed mostly with grace but also with vegetables.

Beet the Devil received 7th place in the 2011 Interactive Fiction Competition. It was also a 2011 XYZZY Award finalist for Best Individual NPC.
